Pakistan has always produced the best in terms of bowling. In addition to seamers, the country is also ahead in terms of producing quality spinners. Over the years, Pakistan has provided World Cricket with a completely different class of spinners. These include Abdul Qadir, Yasir Shah, Shahid Afridi, Saeed Ajmal, and many more. Yet another prolific gift by Pakistan to the world of spin bowling is Danish Kaneria. Danish Kaneria finished, by weight of statistics, as Pakistan’s best spinner, taking 261 Test wickets, 25 more than Abdul Qadir. However, the debate on whether Kaneria was better than the latter still rages on.

Danish Kaneria: Career Highlights
Danish Kaneria will end his career as the highest wicket-taking spinner for Pakistan – itself an achievement – but he will probably be remembered more as the cricketer who was banned for life by the ECB after being found guilty of corruption in a spot-fixing case. Kaneria took 276 international wickets and more than 1000 first-class ones, but the spot-fixing saga has blotted his CV irretrievably.
As a leggie, Kaneria had a quirky action but maintained a good loop and often gained extra bounce to catch even the best batsmen off guard. Another notable aspect about Kaneria was that he did not overuse his googly – it was reserved as a surprise weapon. He claimed four 7-fers in Tests, including two such efforts in Sydney and Napier. The emergence of Saeed Ajmal pushed him to the back burner. Later on, the English county stint happened and as did the expulsion.
But something was missing – the unknown quantity that makes great leggies great. It was not so much in Kaneria’s tools but in his persona, and a peculiar lack of guile, especially if he was to be compared to countrymen such as Abdul Qadir and Mushtaq Ahmed of whom had a wonderful presence. In turn, Kaneria also lacked a good captain, or always good supporting bowlers at the other end. Latterly he suffered the lack of even an able wicketkeeper.
Only behind fast bowlers Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis and Imran Khan, Danish is fourth on the bowlers’ list with most Test wickets for Pakistan. He also bagged a 5-wicket haul against every Test playing nation apart from England.
